The British Medical Journal published results of over 100 studies that involved supplimenting folic acid in peoples diet. They found that it actually helped lower homocystein levels. Reducing homocysteine levels in the general population by a moderate amount, could reduce the risk of heart attack by 16%, deep vein thrombosis by 25%, and stroke by 25%.

Folic acid is essential to the normal development of a baby’s spine, brain, and skull, especially during the first weeks of pregnancy.

Research has shown that women who take a daily vitamin supplement containing folic acid before conception and in the early weeks of pregnancy can reduce the risk of having a baby with an Neural Tube Defect.
